Last year, The Fire and Rescue Service attended over 167,000 fires in England alone.

What Fire Protection steps should I take?

Step 1
You need to decide on the ‘responsible’ or ‘competent person’ for your overall fire safety. If you’re unsure about who to appoint, we’ll advise you on the necessary criteria.

Step 2
You need to look at potential fire hazards. These could include –

Dangerous substances, such as flammable substances or stored oxygen
Materials that might promote the spread of fire, heat or smoke
Your property’s features – was it purpose-built for fire protection?
The construction of your building – the materials used.

Step 3
Once you’ve identified the fire hazards, you need to look at the people who might be at risk. You need to ask yourself these questions –

Can my employees react quickly to a fire or an alarm?
Is anyone (employees, visitors or contractors) working in a high fire risk area?
Could a fire outbreak impact any other occupants, tenants or those nearby?

Step 4
Once you’ve identified the fire hazards, you need to look at the people who might be at risk. You need to ask yourself these questions –

What systems are in place to detect fire?
How will we alert individuals that there is a fire?
What are the means of escape?
What fire-fighting equipment do we have?

A good way to assess the viability o the measures you have in place is to carry out a fire drill. This will help determine whether

your employees have sufficient training
exit routes are clearly visible
fire safety equipment is stored in the right place and can be used correctly

Step 5
Put training and emergency plans in place.
